SUNDIAL PROJECT ACCOLADE
27-05-2005
The British Sundial Society has announced this week that the winner of their prestigious award for the best sundial made in Great Britain by a professional maker was Joanna Migdal. Joanna served her sculpture apprenticeship and worked in Haslemere for twenty five years.
The award was given for a sundial positioned in Westnye Gardens Guildford. Under the guidance of Sandra Young of the Wilky Group, the project was sponsored by 30 Surrey based businesses and supported by Guildford Borough Council and Surrey Chambers of Commerce as a piece of public art to
mark the millennium. The exceptionally accurate heavy dial, with its chains and wave-born classical numerals, celebrates Guildford's historical trading connections via the River Wey. The location of the sundial was suggested by the council's River Wey Group who monitor improvements along the river. The judges were particularly impressed with the way that the whole project had been integrated...with the hard landscaping designed by Kay Munt from the Council's Landscape Department and with the help of extra
funding from the SITA Environmental Trust to create a inspiring setting for the piece.
Before it was installed, the dial was chosen by the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers for exhibition in its
museum at Guildhall, where it was displayed alongside the work of some of the world's most famous clockmakers.
"I am really honored to win this award and particularly as it is for the Guildford Sundial. There was such wonderful cooperation between all the groups and individuals who worked together on this exciting project. I am particularly grateful to Sandra Young for her most generous leadership and to Kay Munt for her most creative landscaping and project managing - the award is really for everyone involved," said Joanna Migdal.
